When Writers Write
Most writers have a defined writing process. Stephen King likes to write in the morning and nap in the afternoon. Jimmy Carter begins his writing day around 6:00 am and writes until lunchtime when he calls it quits.
I write at night, in pure darkness, except for the muted TV (which is always on), the living room lights and my two desk lamps. I like the dark as you can tell.
What I like about writing at night are the sounds I don’t hear. I don’t hear cars or people.
If you want to get my attention email me at night. There’s an excellent chance I’ll read your message and attachments. There’s an even better chance that I’ll send you a list of questions by the time you’re back in the office.
Every writer has a schedule. If they’re important contacts for you, learn it. Give the writer information the way they like it (I like email and detest the phone).
Very few freelancers keep nine-to-five schedules. Generally speaking we have a certain time of day when we like to write.
Just because we don’t return your phone call immediately, don’t assume your project is out of sight or out of mind. It’s not. If you’re a writer, work never leaves you. You take it everywhere.
