I want to be a Gen Z social media bombshell
I like YouTube and many other social media platforms. I enjoy watching vlogs and podcasts hosted by people whose lives are vastly different from mine. My favorite vlogs feature cruising, van life, travel and politics.
Recently I started following a YouTube duo who host a progressive political podcast called I’ve Had It. They broadcast from their home in Oklahoma, a state that is deeply red. Each broadcast (they do three a day) reassures me that there are reasonable people even in the heart of MAGA World.
I watch vlogs hosted by Gen Zers who, if they’re popular enough, are labeled “influencers” because they have a significant impact on the way we live, what we buy, and where we travel. Imagine having the power to influence the world as a twenty something.
Top influencers can earn millions by promoting themselves on sites such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), and through sponsorships. And then there are the side business opportunities such as Only Fans.
Sex with a thousand men
In 2023, a twenty-five year old UK Gen Zer came up with an ingenious way to ditch her boring 9-to-5 job. She became an Only Fans cammer and built her brand into a multimillion dollar empire. The model claims to earn $800,000 a month from her videos and subscriptions.
Last year, to take her channel to the next level, she slept with 1,057 barely legal college students (and probably a few husbands) in twelve hours during freshers week (the first week of university in the UK).
During a post coital interview, she announced plans to offer life coaching videos targeting women who fear their marriages might be in jeopardy. She also said that photographing the IDs of the participants was a brilliant idea because it will likely earn her millions in child support.
The value of older men
I watched another Gen Z YouTuber discuss how to attract and date older men. She defined “older” as men in their late thirties or early forties.
The young paramour said she had an affinity for this age group because the men are in the prime of their career, financially secure, likely to own property, go on exotic vacations and drive expensive cars.
She did issue a warning to fellow Gen Zers who want to copy her life path. “You need to be a bombshell to get noticed by high value men. If you’re meh, YMMV.”
The bombshell did leave some breadcrumbs for those who aspire to her lifestyle. “I’m considered a bombshell so I don’t need to troll bars, restaurants or clubs to find a man. I do my fishing on Tinder, Bumble and Reddit.”
The Gen Z salesgirl
Sometimes I actually get out in the world and recently ran into a real life version of bombshell girl. I was at a big box retailer and needed to pay for my item so I walked over to an under-busy worker to get some help. I discovered her texting while leaning on an endcap ignoring the customers.
The girl told me that in order to get the advertised sale price I had to use the store app. I struggled trying to download and navigate the app.
“May I ask how old you are?” she asked without looking up from her phone.
“That wasn’t an age-ism question was it?” I asked. “I don’t know if you’re aware but you forgot to mention two steps in the checkout process and that’s why the transaction won’t go through.”
Crickets.
No apology, no acknowledgement and no ownership that she made the process more difficult. Just crickets.
“I’m sorry could you hold on just a sec,” she said. “A group of us are going out tonight and I’m in charge of organizing the squad. I need to send a quick text to the crew.”
Seriously?
I’ve had a number of conversations with friends who have Gen Z kids or work with Gen Zers. They say that a lot (but not all) Gen Zers are selfish, disrespectful, under motivated, hyper-connected, and disengaged. They came out of the womb into a digital world where everything is at their fingertips.
In my experience Gen Zers dismiss boomers, Gen X, Gen Y and Millennials claiming we don’t understand the pressures and realities of the modern world. I find it hard to communicate with them. I’ve hired them to do work around my house and either they don’t show up or leave a job half finished.
I hope that when Gen Zers begin to face the challenges of the real world the smugness will wear off and they’ll become real people.
Any day now…
